  6. Background and history. CANET was co-initiated by ica (beijing institute for
  7. computer application) and university of Karlsruhe (Germany) in 1985.

  9. - first link to csnet was set up in 1986.
  10. - install pmdf/bs2000 on siemens 7760 in 1987.
  11. - "cn" top level domain was registed with ddn src-nic by ica in 1990.

  15. - implement internet dns naming and addressing.
  16. - implement pmdf 3.1 on vax/vms or siemens/bs2000.
  17. - adopt rfc-822 format.
  18. - communication media
  19. --public telephone network
  20. --packet switching data network-chinapac.
  21. - transmission speed : 1200/2400/4800 bps
  22. -service provided by canet : worldwide e-mail.

  24. Current status
  25. - top level domain -- cn has been operational since jan.1991.
  26. - currently, the international mail deliver takes half a day.
  27. - at present, 16 sites have been connected.
